Two Life Sentences for Turkish Gangster in High-Profile Cypriot Casino Owner Murder

The Ambush and Its Aftermath

In a significant development in a high-profile murder case, a Turkish gangster, Mustafa Söylemez, has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms by an Istanbul court. This verdict comes in light of the 2022 killing of Northern Cyprus casino owner Halil Falyalı. Söylemez was also found guilty of forming and leading a criminal organization. His brother, Mehmet Faysal Söylemez, was acquitted of the same charges.

The murder, which occurred in February 2022, involved a violent ambush of Falyalı’s motorcade in the village of Çatalköy, Northern Cyprus. Falyalı and his driver, Murat Demirtaş, were brutally killed in the attack and executed by gunmen armed with Kalashnikovs. The attack occurred in the presence of Falyalı’s family, who were traveling in a different vehicle and were unharmed.

Falyalı’s Controversial Life and Connections

Falyalı, a key figure in Northern Cyprus’s online gambling industry and owner of the five-star Les Ambassadeurs Hotel & Casino, was a controversial figure. In 2015, he was implicated by the US government in a heroin trafficking operation and in 2016, accused of laundering narcotics proceeds in the US. Northern Cyprus’s lack of extradition treaties with the US and the UK shielded him from facing charges.

Before his assassination, Turkish Mafia figure Sedat Peker named Falyalı as a central figure in an international cocaine trafficking network linked to prominent Turkish politicians. Peker, currently in exile, has released a series of YouTube videos detailing alleged illegal activities by government figures, including claims that Falyalı laundered drug profits through his casinos and held incriminating “obscene tapes” of politicians.

A History of Crime and Escape

The Söylemez brothers, notorious for their turbulent history in the criminal underworld, have long been figures of interest in the realm of organized crime. Their notorious past dates back to the 1990s when they were deeply embroiled in the control of arms and drug trafficking in eastern Turkiye. This period was marked by a brutal war against rival factions, with the brothers employing extreme measures to maintain their dominance, including an infamous plot to attack a political rival from a helicopter using flamethrowers.

After Turkish authorities issued a warrant for their arrest in 2004, the brothers fled from Turkiye to northern Iraq and Azerbaijan. Their return to Turkiye shortly before Falyalı’s murder brought them back into the spotlight and directly into this high-profile case.

The exact motive behind Halil Falyalı’s assassination remains shrouded in mystery. The intertwining of Falyalı’s controversial past with the Söylemez brothers’ return to Turkiye has sparked numerous theories, ranging from political conspiracies to internal feuds within the criminal underworld. The complexity of these intertwined histories adds a layer of intrigue to the case, leaving more questions than answers about the true reasons behind this violent act.
